What is a Tiffin Box? A tiffin can be a snack, packed lunch or even a sweet dish. Generally, it’s a light meal with less spice that’s served in small portions and the box is the container that serves as storage - Tiffin Box. They are also convenient as each section can be used as an individual bowl, meaning no plate is needed.

Selected Container - Tiffin Box

History of Tiffin Box The idea of the tiffin is believed to have emerged in the 19th century and credited to the British. The history of the tiffin box, however, dates back to a much earlier time. First Plastic - considered harmful then Stainless Steel. For the design and structure, several methods can be applied, such as compartmental and layers.

Why is it popular?
Tiffin as a lunch carrier too became popular in and around the 1880s when Gora Sahib began a tradition of having a lighter snack after the (deliberate) light lunch to survive the hot weather in India.

The spread of tiffin box
The tiffin carrier also made its way across Asia to places like Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China and Malaysia. Some are made of wood, bamboo and porcelain, and decorated with floral prints or ornamentation. Singapore’s famous Raffles Hotel has a restaurant called the Tiffin Room decorated with antique tiffin carriers in glass cases, where a lavish Indian buffet is offered.

Mumbai Dabbawala
Where today we have Postmates, 20th Century India had dabbawala– delivery men who deliver hot lunches fresh from homes and restaurants to workers across India in tiffin boxes. The term ‘dabbawala’ literally translates to ‘one who carries a box’ and originated in 1890 in Mumbai, when a man named Mahadeo Havaji Bachche created a business delivering tiffins packed with hearty food to workers.
As popularity and demand increased, he began to employ hundreds of boys to become dabbawala and the service spread to cities across India.
